Doing a Diploma?

Or...how I can still do the things I really want to, and make a living
Life's funny. You think you know what is most likely to happen, most of the time - but if you are anything like me, you are wrong about 99% of the time. 'We are all experts in hindsight' - or so the great "they" tell us, but when it comes to forecasting futures, especially our own, we never know what's around the corner.
So, yes - life is complicated, but what does that have to do with doing a diploma in Drama and Theatre studies? - And more precisely how does the whole thing related to doing what I really want to do?
I want to be an actor.
A phrase which many people have said, heard or been a part of in some way. So many people want to see their name in lights, be it broadway, hollywood or anything in between - being on stage is magical - "there is no business like show-business" - and it's almost as true as it sounds.
Let me boil things down a bit - I was going to put something small about my decision at the end of the last post, but I decided to make a whole post for this, but still keep things relatively simple. - Aside from the fact that the anniversary post popped up in the middle (I just realized it was 1 month), things are pretty much going to plan.
Simply put here is several key premises regarding my decision, followed by a part-based conclusion. Hopefully they flow logically and are "argumentally sound" even from a philosophical point of view.
  1. I want to be an actor
  2. I love video-games
  3. I am good at acting, video games and information technology
  4. Acting is a very hard profession to break into, and even harder to find long-term employment
  5. Careers surrounding video games are easier to get into but still slightly hard
  6. Careers in IT are plentiful
  7. There is a course offered in IT, majoring in multimedia, with an option to gear towards games-design
  8. This course does not have a high amount of contact hours
  9. Therefore, this course should offer high employment prospects and should leave room for additional study.
  10. There is a course offered in Drama and Theatre studies, specifically a diploma
  11. This diploma allows you to complete a major (8 units) in DTS and be awarded a qualifcation
  12. This qualification is designed to be studied in combination with another award
  13. This course offers a subject that I can do next semester that does not clash with any Games Development subjects
  14. Therefore, I am going to do the IT Course and combine it with the DTS Diploma

That's about the length of the reasoning behind doing it. The subject I will be doing next semester is Body, Voice and Text - which should also help me understand the voice-artist side of games-design. The overall diploma will help me as well, giving me ideas for stories, creativity, insight and artistic flair.

Anyway, I shall stop now - before it sounds like I'm making excuses because I feel guilty for having chosen it. I do slightly, - as it means that my degree may be slightly longer and I already dropped out of drama studies before (through a mistake of my own) - but yes, if I am going to do this - I am goign to need to commit fully to it. - The same goes for the games development course - and in fact anything I decide to do in general.

I'll think it over. There is 60 odd days untill Semester 2 begins - but I want a commitment well before then. My own, self-set deadline is Sunday Night. If the answer is yes I will go and apply for it Monday - this deadline is not just for the Diploma of Drama and Theatre studies but also for the games development course. I'm certainly postively geared towards them both, the Games Dev one more so than the diploma - but I've really got to let them sit inside just a little longer.

~Till next~

Time...how it escapes me!

Phew...

Monday I went to C-Link to find out that my appointment was actually the day after (today), d'oh. From there I went to DND and spent some birthday money - actually all of it, lol.

I bought xbox live - which I got for just $35 - not bad at all, I also bought Doom 3 and Crimson Skies.

In the afternoon Tong and I went to uni and saw Judy and Andrew. Then we went to the Chong-Hua (spelling?) club sports and rec bbq evening. After that I dropped Ying of and got home around 9 ish - by the time I set up xbox live it was close to 10.30 - and I got to bed around 10.45-11.00

I was kind of dissapointed with xbox live at first - as hardly anyone was on, it was slow and felt very foreign...but I like it better now....

This morning I woke up at 6.30 and picked up Tong - on the way back to my house Bob rang up so we went to pick him up. We then came back home and played with xbox live for a little bit - before going back to C-Link for the real appointment - LoL. - Everything went *fairly* smoothly, with the only hiccup being that the payments might stop after a set time period - well I will "cross that bridge when I come to it."

I didn't like Crimson Skies at all much - it was okay, but not my type of game - so on the way home I returned it - in exchange for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. (Good Idea). Bob and I spent most of the morning playing around with Project Gotham 2 - via xbox live (hehehe - acting retarded lol).

Beyond that Bob went to sleep around 3 so I played some more PGR2 and then at around 4 I started to play doom 3 - something else I had also bought. I played it for about 90 minutes and got bored - so I cheated my way to the end lol - I will return it soon, but I have to reclaim the instruction book first (I was never given one - :-o - and it was a new game!)

Dropped Tong and Bob off at around 7 and then came home and surfed the internet. Then I took a bath and contemplated taking up a diploma in drama and theatre studies on top of my BITS degree. - I decided to check the timetable out first - It turns out I can do an elective in DTS which counts towards this diploma, and fits in on Tuesdays - the issue is that it isn't a core unit, but that can be completed next year. - The problem (may) be fitting in timetables, but I'm sure I will configure something!

I may apply for the diploma early and see what happens - (if I can).

If not...well too bad.

That brings me to the end of the standard daily roundup, but I'm not finished yet. Prepare for a new post in about another 10 minutes with me explaining why I want to do a Dip.DTS in the first place.

~Cheers~

Catching up till now...

Phew...

I have a lot of catching up to do...here goes :-)

----------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday:

Didn't go into uni. I'm having difficulty remembering what it was that I actually did! I have a feeling it involved playing Guild Wars, and not much else lol. I will post more if I remember it.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Friday:

Tong, Bort, Bob and I went into Uni, I was surprised when Bob was waiting with Tong in the morning. After we went to a psychology lecture as a preview for Bort, we met Link @ dnd and went and saw Mission Impossible 3. I quite enjoyed it. Doom 3 Collectors was still 24.95 on XBOX (preowned) I wanted to get it, but decided to wait untill after saturday night. (My 21st).

I finally activated my visa debit card and tried some quick, cheap fun at eurobet (lol).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday: (Yesterday)

I woke at around 10 and played guild wars untill 1. Tong arrived around 2 - after I rang him, (he was called back to work late, as usual lol), and then we were going to go Bowling. We decided against it and I went out to get a mothers day present.

I had trouble with my bank as the eurobet had (I think) gone through but my balance was not updated - eventaully we deduced the problem and I paid via Credit, with no cash out. (For mothers day - chocolate sea shells FYI).

From there as time drew nearer to my 21st I felt a mixture of worry, aprehension, fear, anxiety, excitement and tension - but all in all it wasn't too bad. Chubbs came over at around 5.55 and then we left home 10 minutes later. Link and Chubbs went to gether and Tong drove me, bob and bort. Jay wasn't there as he had to go to a 70th birthday party for his uncle or something.

All in all the night was good, it went quite fast and I had Chicken Parmagiana and 4 southern comforts, so it was nice. The speech went well, and it was a good turn 0ut - those who we expected to come, came (for the most part at least).

At around 10.30 I came home and we - Bob, Link, Bort and I - decided to try some absinthe - YES!!!!

It was strong and I describe it as 3 levels of burning - but all of them with a dash of poetic charm and general goodness. (lol). I had a total of about 45ml, the others had about 15 - we only got a 100ml bottle so we couldn't go to hard. - My second drink - (20 odd ml) was mixed with about 50ml of water - which took the kick out substantially.

I found that absinthe helped keep back the sedative effects of the alcohol (even though it was 70% lol) and generally I felt fairly awake - in fact I had trouble sleeping. - The height of hallucination came when the computer monitor appeared well out of focus and things were a little "dizzy" - althought with the 4 southers before, 1 small nip of southern later, and the 45ml of absinthe - it's not really a surprise!

Tong left around 1 with Bort in toe.

Went to bed around 3 - slept around 5. Woke around 9. Which brings me to today...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today (Sunday, My birthday).

Got up and gave mum her mother's day present, and I got 3 dvd pack from them towards my birthday. (I got $110 in cash from last-night + $40 gift voucher = 150 woooo hehehe ;-) ).

Took Bob home around 10.30 and got fish n chips for lunch (well chips, dim sims and potato cakes). - Chubbs and I were the only ones home. (Apart from parents) as Link went to Borts for a YuYu Hakusho anime marathon at around 11. (I was in the process of returning Bob when he left). - I also picked up my xbox from Bob's as I plan to get that doom 3 collectors if I can - tomorrow.

Chubbs left around 1pm and from there I had a bath, then started looking at things I could get with my gift money. - I also made a neck chain for my 21st key, which is currently hanging around my neck. hehehe.

I think for my main gift I will get a still camera - around $400 or so - I found a cool olympus 8 mega pixel one for 400 dollars, so I might use the extra birthday money for 256 or maybe (at a stretch) a 512mb xd-pic card (or whatever they are called, lol)!

I think thats about all I have to say for now, it was good to catch up, and fill the whole that I have left, out of sheer laziness.

The 21st was fun, and I am glad it's all over with now - relieved, and glad :-) - in a good way.

The next issue is to do with part time/full time study and payments and then after that it's full focus on my course change. Hehehe.

Okay, more later...hopefully not as long a gap this time. Nice catch up.

Ciao!
